While outdoor lighting adds beauty to the exteriors of our homes, it plays a more essential role in securing our homes. Good outdoor lighting allows physical detection and facial detection of would-be intruders, while effectively minimizing hiding spots. That being said, we don't need to over-illuminate our homes. It has the adverse effect of drawing unwanted attention to the interiors of the building. Additionally, glare from bright, unshielded lights actually decreases safety. For example, in the photo on the left, visibility is reduced due to glare, making it difficult to see the man at the gate.

An example of poor outdoor lighting. The deep shadows created by the glare (left) makes it difficult to see as our pupils constrict, reducing our eyes' ability to adapt to low-light conditions.

Effective Outdoor Lighting helps people be safe, not just feel safe.

Solutions

Security of outdoors depends on the wise use of light fixtures. Visibility should never be compromised. Instead of more and brighter lights, smart lighting should be the goal, lamps that direct light where it is most useful. Effective outdoor lighting must be uniform, to avoid creating glare and deep shadows. It takes into account the immediate surroundings and avoids competing (in terms of their brightness) with the traffic lights. Additionally, the use of light needs to be limited to only when and where it is required. Wide contrasts (between light and dark areas) generated by bright and poorly aimed lights hide danger as they create shadows where criminals can hide.

Here are some simple rules to adhere to when choosing outdoor security lights:

Poorly designed lighting on roadways can cause motorists and pedestrians to be temporarily blinded by glare from unshielded streetlights.
  • Choose fixtures approved by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or one that has an ETL Mark for wet or damp locations. These lights feature weatherproof designs and finishes, making them able to withstand humidity, rain, and snow.
  • Preferably use fully shielded, dark-sky friendly fixtures that shine down, not up, avoiding unwanted glare and contrasts.
  • Only use lights when and where it is needed. Install timers, high-sensitivity photosensor, and turn off lights when not in use. If the need arises, use motion sensors.
  • Use the right amount of light. Too much light is wasteful and impairs vision.
