LED Lighting Helps Phoenix Sky Harbor Achieve Its Sustainability Goals

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has managed to earn a Level 3 Certification in the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program that puts it in the elite list of 7 airports in the US to have this status.

In the last 5-6 years, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has earned quite a name for its unrelenting efforts towards sustainability. These efforts have made it achieve and maintain a Level 2 status with the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program. However, it is in the year 2020 that Phoenix Sky Harbor has added another feather to its cap by achieving Level 3 Airport Carbon Accreditation and becomes one of the only seven airports in the US to have this status.

Apart from other energy saving measures – such as installing solar panels at its Rental Car Center, East Economy Parking areas and recently at the City of Phoenix Aviation Department’s Corporate Office Building – using LED Lighting has resulted in a 17% reduction as far as energy consumption is concerned.

This yet again demonstrates the ability of LED Lighting in helping organizations to achieve their sustainability goals and reduce their carbon footprint.

As Director of Aviation Services James E. Bennett asserts, “Attaining Level 3 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program is a remarkable achievement. Our commitment to sustainability is strong with numerous initiatives underway, all while we continue to deliver world-class service to our customers each day.”

The Airport Carbon Accreditation Program is a voluntary initiative for airports that want to demonstrate their commitment to reduce global warming and climate change. It serves as an international carbon management certification standard for airports and requires participating airports to create a carbon footprint of emissions so that they can see where the greatest reductions can be made and monitor progress.

Phoenix Sky Harbor achieving Level 3 Airport Carbon Accreditation Program with the help of LED Lighting among other energy saving measures only further establishes the facts produced by a study conducted by Environmental Protection Agency. According to the said study, replacing only one light bulb in every house in the US with that of an LED would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 9 billion pounds. Indeed, LEDs lights have the power to change the world.
